Residents rage about reckless driving

FOURWAYS - Residents report that driving on the areas roads is comparable to navigating a battlefield.

According to one resident who did not want to be named, on 23 February between 2.30pm and 3pm he witnessed a red Audi A4 driving erratically, aggressively and dangerously in Fourways.

The resident said on Grosvenor Road the vehicle overtook his car, the car in front of him and a delivery truck around a blind corner, driving directly into oncoming traffic. On Bryanston Drive the Audi driver again attempted to overtake vehicles, driving into oncoming traffic and was then forced to take emergency action to avoid a serious accident.

The resident came across the Audi again at the traffic circle at the intersection of Kingfisher Drive and Alexander Avenue. The driver sped down Kingfisher without slowing down for the traffic circle and allegedly nearly knocked into a white Ford Fiesta, who had the right of way.

“This guy is a menace on the road and if not brought to book it will just be a matter of time before he kills someone,” the resident said.

Other residents claim that inconsiderate drivers are a daily occurrence during morning traffic in Fourways, especially on Kingfisher and Douglas drives. Amanda Irving said, “I am wondering if it’s people avoiding paying tolls on the motorway and then using Fourways as a bit of a ‘chicken run’. Whatever the case, it has certainly made the early morning commute a whole lot more stressful.”

Inspector Edna Mamonyane, spokesperson for Metro police said it was imperative for residents to report reckless driving every time they experience it so that the authorities are made aware of specific problem areas. Mamonyane said Metro police would use this information to justify increased patrols in those areas.

She added that photographs taken by other motorists are usually not admissible in cour to convict reckless drivers as there is always the chance that the photographs or videos have been tampered with. She said the video or photograph needed to reflect the time, date and location of where the reckless driving took place.
