Drunk driving condemned on Fourways’ roads

FOUWAYS - Driving under the influence of alcohol has come under the spotlight in the greater Fourways area.

Diepsloot police and Metro police conducted a roadblock on 20 February from 10pm to 4am and arrested 30 motorists for drunk driving.

According to MMC for Public Safety, Sello Lemao the roadblock was part of an ongoing operation that aims to curb drunk driving.

Lemao said drunk driving was considered to be the biggest threat on the city’s roads with costs to the economy amounting to billions. Families and communities bear the biggest brunt of the consequences resulting from drunk driving. “Our communities are encouraged to stay sober to stay safe,” he said.

Douglasdale police are also cracking down on drunk driving in the policing precinct. According to Warrant Officer Balan Muthan, head of communications for the Douglasdale police, at their most recent roadblock on Malibongwe Drive on 13 February, they arrested 22 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol.
