Taxi violence settlement in the works

JOBURG - Taxi operators have reached a temporary consensus regarding routes in the Waterfall area.

This according to a Democratic Alliance statement, released on 11 February and followed the shootout on 6 February on the corner of Woodmead and Maxwell drives.

During the incident, two taxis were damaged and one was set alight. A meeting between the two feuding taxi rivals, Alexander Taxi Association (ATA) and Alexander Randburg Midrand Sandton Taxi Association (Armsta), was called in the hope of reaching an agreement on 8 February at Derek Masoek building in Johannesburg.

“The matter concerning taxi travel routes has finally been resolved, but temporarily,” read the statement.

Armsta was granted the right to operate from Woodmead Drive/R55 right up to Olivenhoutbosch (Stop12), and turn right from Woodmead Drive to the Waterfall Hospital and return back the same way.

ATA was given the right to operate from the N1 and Old Pretoria Road using the Allandale Road and can turn left into Waterfall Hospital and return the same way.

Ward 93 councillor Annette Deppe reportedly said, “This decision is temporary and is based on the current operations, according to the description of their routes in the Waterfall area.”

Among the stakeholders present at the meeting, was Metro police. Their spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the meeting was adjourned pending the appeal process by one of the taxi associations. Deppe reportedly said the association in question is Armsta.
