The time to Act is now

FOURWAYS - A local advertising agency gave children at Witkoppen Health and Welfare Centre the power of play.

Advertising Cinema Television (Act), a Fourways-based advertising agency collected and distributed toys to the centre as part of its annual contribution to the community.

George Garcia, CEO of the agency believes strongly in giving back to the community.

“We are living in an amazing country rich in beauty and culture but each day while travelling to work we see the unemployed and destitute begging on street corners,” he said. “It’s important that we all try to give something back to the community, no matter how small. We decided several years ago that we would make it an annual event to give something back, whether it’s blankets, food or toys.”

The agency’s employees organised for their loved ones to donate toys and two staff members, Alexandra Smith and CharĂ©ll Stoop approached Janet Malone, business development manager of the centre. Malone was only too happy to hear about the donation.

Many of the beneficiaries of the services provided by the welfare centre live in informal settlements in the greater Fourways area. Many are unemployed and live in poverty without basic necessities.

The welfare centre is entirely donor funded and therefore do not possess the funds to give their patients treats.

“It was a treat to receive these toys and to see the smiles on the children’s faces,” Malone said.

The agency is already working on collecting donations for their next drive at the end of this year. This time they will be looking for toys, food, stationery, toiletries and peanut butter in plastic jars.
