Villagers weed the way for wetland preservation

BROADACRES - A group of residents from the Evergreen Broadacres Lifestyle Village set out to commemorate Wetland Preservation Day by weeding their own wetland.

World Wetlands Preservation Day was celebrated on 2 February.

Last year, the stream and wetland area that forms part of the village’s extensive parkland area was rehabilitated and hydro-seeded with indigenous grasses.

The summer rains ensured the overgrowth of grass and weeds that completely overwhelmed the village’s residents.

On 31 January, a group of 30 residents from the village volunteered their services to help the gardeners. Weeds like nut grass, black jacks, morning glory and khakibos were identified.

The volunteers split into groups and set out to work with garden forks and spades. After over four hours of toiling in the hot and humid conditions, and with many aching backs and sore muscles, the volunteers could look with satisfaction on the fruits of their labour.
