UPDATE: CPF urges community to keep trusting police

DOUGLASDALE - After the suspension of 72 police officers, for participating in intimidation and illegal protest action, the Douglasdale Community Policing Forum (CPF) has made an official statement.

Chairperson of the Douglasdale CPF, Jean Berdou, said the forum wishes to thank the community for their patience while the police address the various issues at the Douglasdale Police Station.

“I would like to take the opportunity to also thank our national commissioner, General Riah Phiyega; Gauteng provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Lesetja Mothiba; and Major General Oswald Reddy, our Honeydew Cluster Commander for their time and effort.”

Berdou said that from the CPF perspective, their prime concern has been to maintain proper and effective policing of the community. “In addition, we are and remain fully committed to maintaining the best possible relationship between the police and the community,” he said. “We are pleased to report that the policing has continued throughout this difficult time and that we have experienced a relatively crime-free period.”

Berdou said the client service centre of the station and sector patrol vehicles have been fully operational throughout the process and the precinct has also received additional assistance in the form of the Gauteng flying squad, extra vehicles and crew. The Douglasdale precinct has also received assistance from the police tactical response team during the hearing process.

With regards to the national police service’s decision to suspend 72 Douglasdale police members, Berdou said the forum echoes and supports the principle that all members ought to maintain discipline even when they are not happy.

“It is never pleasant when such circumstances take place and the forum appeals to all community members to maintain trust and a good working relationship with the police at this time,” he said.
