ANC to bear costs of Selebi’s memorial and funeral

JOBURG - The African National Congress (ANC) announced that the organisation will carry the costs for the funeral and memorial service of the former police chief and ANC member Jackie Selebi.

ANC’s national spokesperson, Zizi Kodwa said they held numerous meetings with Selebi’s family regarding preparations for the funeral. Kodwa said, “It was agreed with the family that the African National Congress will be allowed to bury Comrade Jacky Selebi who has been for most of his life at the centre of the organisation’s leadership. Based on this decision, the ANC will bear all costs related to his memorial service and funeral.”

He added that a committee representing the family and the organisation has been established to manage all processes and funeral logistics. Kodwa said the committee led by the organisation’s deputy secretary general, Jessie Duarte, has been meeting on a daily basis and has agreed on the memorial service in honour of Selebi which will be held on 29 January at 5pm at Tshwane Events Centre (Pretoria Showgrounds).

Kodwa said the funeral service will be on 31 January at 8am at NG Kerk, Moreleta Park, at the corner of Garsfontein Road and De Ville Bois Drive, Pretoria. He added that ANC marshals and Tshwane Metro Police will be assisting the public and media to access both services with ease.
