Hop to it and adopt a bunny

FOURWAYS - Residents thinking of adopting a pet this year should consider trying something a bit different by welcoming a Lonehill bunny into their homes.

The Lonehill Fire Station is home to 150 to 200 rabbits. A sterilisation programme is underway to control further rabbit breeding but catching the rabbits can be a difficult process and more baby rabbits are born every season.

According to Cristina Botef, who is involved with the upkeep of the rabbits and other animals at the Lonehill Fire Station, despite their best efforts over the festive season, there are now three more litters of baby rabbits. So far, the sterilisation programme has managed to sterilise 223 rabbits but Botef said the two to three who aren’t sterilised keep finding each other.

Botef and other volunteers have managed to catch all the babies that were born over the festive season with the exception of one. All the babies are currently at a foster home, but Botef is looking for good, stable homes for all of them.

She added that while they mainly focus on homing the bunnies into the wild, the Lonehill Fire Station has also become a dumping ground for unwanted pet rabbits.

Currently there are two adult brothers, Pongo and Snow, who were dumped at the station and are looking for a good home together.

Botef said she did strict home checks before the babies were adopted to ensure that they would be adopted into a suitable environment.

According to myhouserabbit.com, pet rabbits make wonderful indoor companions as they are quiet, clean and affectionate animals who can be litter trained.
