Two vehicles stuck on flooded bridge on Witkoppen

SUNNIINGHILL - Two vehicles were stuck on the bridge on Witkoppen Road, between Leeuwkop Road and Rivonia Road after the bridge flooded during heavy rains.

Metro police spokesperson Edna Mamonyane said a bus and light motor vehicle were stuck on the bridge due to the flooding. She said Johannesburg Roads Agency was on-site to clear the drainage and road-side assistance helped to remove the vehicles safely. She said no one was hurt.

She said she was aware of flooding throughout the city.

Mamonyane said the problem has been resolved and traffic is flowing again.

Traffic SA tweeted that traffic had been heavily delayed on Witkoppen Road in both directions.

The City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi warned the community to be cautious when travelling through the area.

Ward 93 councillor Annette Deppe said the problem is that the bridge was low-lying and often flooded when it rains. She said the water runs into a confluence into the Jukskei River. She made reference to previous times the low-lying bridges on Witkoppen Road had flooded and mentioned the example of when a woman motorist was swept off the bridge between Rivonia Road and Stone Haven Road in her car and drowned in the river a few years ago.

Deppe said there is a lack of warning signs alerting motorists to the low-lying bridges in the area and that the alternative should be to station Metro police officers along those affected areas in order to re-direct traffic to routes that are not affected.

Deppe said that she included the fact that the bridges needed to be built up in her last financial report.
