Gardener knocked down and killed by drunk driver

FOURWAYS - A gardener was knocked over and killed by a motorist who was under the influence of alcohol on New Year's Day.

According to Douglasdale Community Policing Forum chairperson, Jean Berdou, the gardener had decided to go to work at his employer’s home in Beverley on New Year’s Day despite it being a public holiday.

Berdou explained that the gardener wanted to mow the lawn for his employer so that his garden would look good for the new year.

Later that day, the gardener was cycling down William Nicol Driv, on his way back to his home in Diepsloot when he was knocked down by a car. According to Berdou the driver of the vehicle, who is a Fourways resident, was under the influence of alcohol and had lost control of the car, knocking over two signposts before hitting the gardener. Berdou said the driver (22) had stolen his father’s car earlier that day and had taken it on a joyride. It was later discovered that the driver had also been driving without a licence.

Berdou said the driver had since been charged with theft of motor vehicle, driving under the influence, driving without a licence and culpable homicide.

The gardener was a Malawian citizen and his body was taken to Malawi by his family for burial.
