Not so nice way to end 2014

BROADACRES - Fourways resident Michael King received a nasty surprise on 31 December when his Toyota Fortuner was stolen from the parking lot of Life Fourways Hospital.

King was visiting his daughter who was admitted into the hospital at the time. King parked his car in the secure parking lot at the hospital where there are security guards, cameras and an access card process. “I know for a fact the doors were locked as I always check. I first checked my driver’s door, then the right rear door as I walked past and lastly I checked the tailgate,” said King.

He added he did not leave his access card in the car as this was a force of habit. “I am labelled ‘Mr Paranoia’ by my family,” said King. Additionally King used a steering lock in his vehicle. However, when he returned his one-year-old Toyota Fortuner was no longer there and suspected it was stolen from the parking lot.

According to King, his arrival time was written and recorded in the security book at the boom gate, however there was no exit time recorded.

Life Fourways Hospital’s media liaison officer Jane Lamprey has confirmed the vehicle was stolen from the parking lot and that video footage of King’s vehicle being tailgated out of the boom was captured. She went on to say this was an unfortunate and isolated case and they are doing their best to beef up security at the hospital. “We are having talks with the Douglasdale police to prevent cases like this from happening again and to enhance our security measures,” assured Lamprey.

According to Douglasdale police standby Warrant Officer Daniel Mavimbela for the Honeydew cluster, a full investigation is underway regarding this particular case. King would like to warn the public of personal safety and not be naive about parking your car in seemingly safe places.
