Manhunt for cigarette truck hijackers

DIEPSLOOT - Police have launched a manhunt for suspects who hijacked a security company's vehicle and a cigarette delivery van in Diepsloot Extension 11 on 9 January.

Both vehicles were later recovered on a gravel road near William Nicol Drive, about two kilometres from where the hijacking took place.

According to Warrant Officer Daniel Mavimbela, head of communications for the Diepsloot police, at the time of the hijacking cigarettes were being delivered to a store. A group of seven suspects with firearms accosted the driver of the delivery can and forced him into the back of his panel van. Another group of suspects held up the security guards, who were escorting the delivery van, at gun point. They robbed the security guards of their firearms and then fled the scene towards the said gravel road.

The suspects took all the cigarettes before abandoning both vans on the gravel road. The security guards and the driver of the delivery truck were not harmed during the hijacking.

The suspects apparently drove away from the gravel road in four vehicles, a black Mercedes Benz, a grey Toyota Corolla, a Nissan bakkie and a Toyota Quantum.

The police are appealing to the members of the community not to try and confront the suspects if spotted. They should contact the nearest police station, or Crime Stop at 08600 10111 or SMS Crime Line on 32211.
