Eskom confirms nationwide load shedding

JOBURG - On 7 January, Eskom revealed that the power system was expected to come under severe strain from this week, but stated that no load shedding was planned.

Khulu Phasiwe of Eskom said, “No load shedding is planned for this week, but the power system remains constrained. This means that the system remains vulnerable, meaning that any extra load or faults in the system may necessitate the need to implement load shedding. “However, load shedding will only be used as a measure of last resort in order to protect the power system from a total collapse/blackout.”

However, on 9 January the entity revealed that they had initiated stage 1 load shedding as of 11am.

The Eskom media desk tweeted, “Eskom has started load shedding in stage 1 as of 11:05. We would like to appeal to customers to reduce their electricity usage as much as they can, as it will ease the pressure on the system.”

The entity said load shedding schedules were available on its website and thanked all customers who assisted by using electricity sparingly.
