Terrible consequences of fireworks

FOURWAYS - Woodrock Animal Rescue, a non-profit organisation near Fourways, has recently come to the rescue to a miniature pincer on New Year’s Eve.

One of the organisation’s volunteers was driving around Pretoria during the frightening fireworks and noticed little Chrystal running around frantically.

According to the rescue’s founder Estelle Meldau, after the volunteer stopped and put Chrystal in the car, the little dog was so frightened and distraught that she jumped out of the car window, breaking both her front legs.

She was then immediately rushed to a vet where an X-ray and examination confirmed both her legs were broken.

“The quote for her repair was in the region of R12 000 to R17 000,” said Meldau. Which neither the volunteer nor the owners of Chrystal could afford, she added.

With the help of the public and the rescue centre, enough funds were raised and Chrystal was able to have her surgery. According to Meldau, Chrystal is making a steady recovery and is doing well. The volunteer who rescued Chrystal has decided to adopt and take care of her.

“As an animal rescue centre we stress that the use of fireworks around animals is hazardous and causes them much distress,” said Meldau.
