Unite for crime prevention this year

DOUGLASDALE - The Douglasdale Community Policing Forum hopes members will put community involvement highly on their new year's resolutions.

“2015 is upon us and a new year and its challenges and blessings, as well as the traditional new year’s resolutions, are no doubt doing the rounds,” said Jean Berdou, chairperson of the forum. He explained that safety and security are one of the highest priorities a community must aim for and this can best be achieved by means of an effective community police partnership. The success of such a partnership is highly dependent on community members getting involved.

Berdou said, this year, Douglasdale police will sport their five newly acquired high performance vehicles donated by Auto and General as well as a new response team for priority crimes. The forum will expand their volunteer programme this year and are looking for people wishing to serve at the police station to assist members of the public who visit the station to report crimes. This year the forum will also be rolling out the Community Beat digital advertising and real-time crime warning platforms, thereby expanding their reach. Berdou said the forum hopes to conduct bigger and better community awareness programmes and expand their neighbourhood watch and reservist options. “Additionally, we will be rolling out a pioneering project with the Metro police to improve service delivery and improve traffic and municipal bylaw enforcement activities with a focus on taxi and hawker law enforcement,” he said.

Berdou urged the community to unite this year, not just merely in word or kind thought but in action. “Say no to crime and criminals and pioneer our nation’s most effective crime prevention initiative,” he said. “The time to act is now. May this year be the best in every way and crime free for each and every one of you.”
