Challenges and successes in Ward 106

FOURWAYS - Councillor for Ward 106, Stephen Moore had numerous challenges in his ward this year but also some substantial successes.

Moore said the biggest challenge in Ward 106 was rampant uncontrolled densification. “The Department of Development Planning is not requiring that sufficient infrastructure be in place before permitting further densification,” he said. “The increased pressure on our municipal systems is reaching critical levels in certain areas.”

Moore said the second biggest issue he dealt with in the ward this year was the increased vagrancy occurring on abandoned properties, riverine areas and public open spaces. “The City doesn’t actually have an effective policy to deal with the large number of displaced people moving into the ward,” he said. “The best example of this is the Clay Oven settlement where the City has largely given up trying to control influx to the settlement, although there is still work on that issue.”

Moore also had a number of successes in the ward this year, which included ensuring that Ward 106 featured in the city council’s integrated development plan, stopping a number of illegal developments before they could further exacerbate the ward’s infrastructure woes, and implementing regular ward tours with development planning and urban management to find, report and resolve service delivery issues.

Moore wished all residents in his ward a good festive season and said, “If you are going away travel safe, enjoy and recharge. If you are staying in Joburg, enjoy the best time of year in the city as everything is so quiet, it’s my favourite time of year at home.”
