Four-pawed friends need homes

DIEPSLOOT - FourPaws animal shelter near Diepsloot has some adorable animals up for adoption.

The shelter was established in 2006 with a mission to improve the lives of neglected or abused animals.

The shelter is particularly committed to their feral cat project which educates the public about how to live in harmony with ferals.

Merinda Brits, founder of FourPaws explained that when ferals were removed from an environment, a void was created and ferals from other areas soon filled it. Therefore it is far better to make sure ferals are sterilised than to try to get rid of them.

FourPaws rescues a number of feral cats per week, and where possible they are returned to their colonies, but in some cases they are kept at the shelter to be rehabilitated and re-homed.

The shelter also houses a number of cats abandoned by their previous owners, as well as kittens born into feral colonies. The shelter rescues and re-homes many dogs too.

Currently, they have lots of kittens ranging from five weeks old to four months old, as well as a number of dogs up for adoption.

At the shelter all animals are vaccinated, de-wormed and sterilised.

Sacha Fraser of the shelter said strict checks would be done to inspect potential pet owners’ homes before adoption and an adoption fee would apply.
