Sisters are doing it for themselves

MONTECASINO - Jacaranda FM and its listeners at the Sisters with Blisters event raised R400 000 on 22 November.

Held at Montecasino, the walk was in aid of helping woman and children affected by abuse and violence. Over 5 000 men, women and children, and their pets, took to the streets in Fourways for the 5km walk in solidarity with the 16 Days of Activism campaign. In its eighth year running, Sisters with Blisters is attended by South Africans from all walks of life who are united in a single cause to support those who are victims of abuse.

DJ’s Rian van Heerden, Martin Bester, Barney Simon and Frankie du Toit were there to show their support along with celebrities Rosie Motene, Jason Greer, singer Nadine and actor Brandon Auret. Women from the South African Police Services Provincial Family Violence, Child Offences and Sexual Offences Unit made it clear that they firmly stand by the work that Sisters with Blisters do by trading in their working shoes for walking shoes and showing their support. Martin Bester, Jacaranda FM personality, commented at the event, “Today’s turnout is amazing and I am happy to have been a part of it. There are at least two reasons why I am doing this; firstly to present the survivors and victims of abuse with our support and secondly to send a very strong message out to the perpetrators and the authorities that we are serious about this issue.”

A cheque was handed over by the radio station’s general manager, Kevin Fine, to Women and Men Against Child Abuse (WMACA), a non-profit organisation committed to fighting for the rights of the child and to end the abuse of children in South Africa through a multifaceted and aggressive offensive against any form of abuse and gender violence.

The money raised from Sisters with Blisters will go towards the ongoing work of the organisation which provides ongoing support to the Kidz Clinics. The Kidz Clinics provides a range of comprehensive, professional and child-friendly treatment services to the victims of child abuse.
