Roar in the community

FOURWAYS - Treasurer of the Lions Club Fourways, Gerard Guinee, gave an insight on some of the good work the club has done over the past few years.

Lions Clubs International is the world’s largest service club organisation with more than 1.3 million members in about 45 000 clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas around the world.

After leaving the Netherlands to come to South Africa almost seven years ago, Guinee was faced with being in foreign country with not knowing anyone or anything. Already a member of a Lions club in his native country, it only made sense to join a club here in South Africa.

“The Lions club has helped me meet people in the Fourways community. I get to be involved in some good charity projects as well as socialise with members of the community,” he added.

The club aims to bring together members of the community by running charity initiatives and programmes. The most recent project is their Christmas cake run. “This is a national project, all clubs around the country sell cakes to the public and all proceeds go to charity,” said Guinee. He added that cakes can be also be brought at the Broadacres Spar.

In addition to the cake run, the club is heavily involved in uplifting the health of members of the community and carries out eye screenings done at Wikoppen Primary School and in Diepsloot with the help of some gracious donations from the public. “We are physically involved in every project; we help about 800 children through our projects, said Guinee.

Guinee explained that the club is always looking for new members that are passionate and want to be involved in the happenings in the area. There aren’t any rules or regulations, and prospective members need to attend a monthly meeting and will be inducted into the club. However, there is a membership fee.

Anyone wanting to be a member of the Lions club should email the secretary.
