VIDEO: Goat abuser arrested and charged

DIEPSLOOT - The man charged with beating a goat to death in Mpumalanga has been arrested and charged with animal cruelty.

UPDATE: 9 October, 2.30pm:

The abuse of the goat was captured on video and distributed to various animal rescue groups.

Fourways-based animal rescue group, Woodrock Animal Rescue, intervened and campaigned for the man to be punished for his actions. Estelle Meldau of the rescue group said they wanted to make an example of the goat abuser to show that animal cruelty would not be tolerated. It was reported that the abuser, Sipho Makamu (26) appeared in the Malelane Magistrate’s Court on 9 October following his arrest on Tuesday. Makamu was released on a warning, while the case has been postponed to 10 November pending further investigation.

9 October, 9.30am:

Woodrock Animal Rescue near Diepsloot is taking a stand against animal abuse by taking steps to convict a man suspected of abusing a young goat.

A horrific video surfaced in September of a man beating a young goat while it screamed in agony and distress.

The video depicts the man carrying the goat by its legs, then sitting down and holding the goat between his legs. He proceeds to pummel the goat, hitting it across its face, head and neck. The screams of the goat continue the whole time and are chilling.

The abuse allegedly occurred at a farm in Mpumalanga. Estelle Meldau of Woodrock said the video had been sent to numerous animal rescue organisations yet nothing had yet been done.

She said since her rescue organisation had been alerted to the video, they had been unrelenting in their efforts to raise awareness and obtain justice for the abused goat.

“Woodrock steps out of its comforts to attend to all animals in need,” Meldau said.

“Woodrock would not be doing right if we afforded another group to attend to the arrest knowing full well that we are simply passing the buck.”

Meldau said Woodrock together with Soweto Animals Rescue and Advisory Centre are taking steps to prosecute the alleged animal abuser and will be making an example of him.

The video first appeared on the Lowvelder‘s website last month
