UPDATE: Fireman speaks out on BMW fire

FOURWAYS - The reasons why a newly purchased BMW burst into flames on Witkoppen Road on 7 October are still unknown.

9 October, 3pm:

Fire station commander Francois Swanepoel of The Hunters Hill fire station told Fourways Review they received a call about a car that was on fire and immediately dispatched a team to investigate.

On arrival, the team witnessed a BMW 3 series on fire. Onlookers watched in dismay as the car burnt to a cinder. Swanepoel confirmed that the owner of the vehicle was not hurt and managed to escape in the nick of time.

BMW said it was investigating the cause of the fire and had yet to find a reason.

9 October, 11am:

Manager of Group Automotive Communications for the BMW Group Edward Makwana said BMW was not aware of any other cases of BMW cars catching on fire in South Africa due to recent past quality control measures or campaigns, for example recalls that were initiated by the BMW Group.

“We will investigate the incident of the BMW 3 Series Sedan that caught fire on Witkoppen Road on 7 October and provide the necessary feedback,” said Makwana.

8 October, 2pm:

Although the reason is unclear at this point, it is known the car-maker BMW on many occasions has announced a recall of their luxury vehicles.

BMW South Africa has failed to comment (on the fire) thus far according to @Pigspotter.
