Sweet treats raise cancer awareness

FOURWAYS - Cupcakes for Hope held their annual National Cupcake Day 4 Kids with Cancer event on 27 September at Fourways Mall.

Cupcakes for Hope is a community-driven project which utilises their volunteers’ collective love for baking to create awareness and raise funds for children with life-threatening diseases.

Since 2009, the non-profit organisation has helped more than 200 patients with their medical and day-to-day expenses and has donated to 14 charities including Cansa, the Sunflower Fund, Choc and the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital. In September 2012 the organisation hosted South Africa’s first National Cupcake Day 4 Kids with Cancer at 20 venues across South Africa.

The event also served as an awareness day, to spread the message that early detection of cancer saves lives. On 27 September, the organisation held their third National Cupcake Day event, this time at Fourways Mall. There were 55 participating malls across South Africa.

The brightly attired cupcake angels sold delicious and beautifully decorated cupcakes to the mall patrons to raise funds for children living with cancer.

The angels also managed to raise awareness of the early warning signs of childhood cancer.
