School plants trees for World Tourism Day

FOURWAYS - TO celebrate World Tourism Day, the pupils of Witkoppen Primary School literally dug deep and planted trees for their school on 23 September.

Both Greenpop and Tourism Ireland SA stated the objective for the tree planting was to give back to the community and to provide eco-education to the children.

“The motto for the initiative was based on tourism and community development. Greenpop, who are a social enterprise that runs urban greening and reforestation projects in sub-Saharan Africa, plants trees and strives to see inspiration instead of gloom… and create innovative and sustainable solutions,” stated Gail Gilbert of Tourism Ireland SA.

Fun certainly was had all round and the excited pupils of Witkoppen Primary School rolled up their sleeves and dug holes, planted trees and made sure their new treasures would be well looked after.

The pupils proposed ways they can look after trees and agreed to water them three times a week.

The school implemented a “grey water” or recycled water programme where pupils will bring water brought from home.

The school committed to starting an Eco Group which will educate the pupils about recycling and environmental issues, added Gilbert.

Both Greenpop and Tourism Ireland SA believe in educating people on tree care, monitoring trees and working with the community in order to leave a lasting legacy.

The tree planting event was just the beginning of an amazing initiative that both enterprises will continue.
