September 25, 2.30pm:

The vehicle belonging to the suspects in a violent pickaxe attack in Magaliessig on 23 September, was recovered on 25 September in Alexandra.

The attack occurred at 12.20 pm on 23 September. According to the son of the victim involved in the attack, who wanted to remain anonymous, his mother’s attackers were three males and one female. He said the suspects had been trying to hack through his family’s wooden front door when they spotted his mother in the entrance hall.

The victim’s son said his mother had been in such shock that she wouldn’t stop screaming so the suspects beat her with the wooden handle of the pickaxe as well as a crow bar, and also used the sharp end of the pickaxe to assault her. The victim’s son said their domestic worker ran into the bathroom during the attack and managed to press the panic button and call the victim’s husband while the attack was happening.

The suspects stole the victim’s personal jewellery as well as two laptops from the study before fleeing the scene in a gold Toyota Corolla with the registration YGF 219 GP. The victim’s son said he suspects that his family home was marked by the suspects, as a Lemon Twist buddy bottle was found slotted into the side of the house facing the road after the attack.

He said his mother is in A stable condition at Sunninghill Hospital and will remain in ICU for a few days, under observation. He also mentioned that the entire family would be undergoing counselling to recover from the trauma of the attack.

Warrant Officer Balan Muthan, head of communications for the Douglasdale police, said the suspects’ vehicle was recovered in Alexandra on 25 September but the suspects were still at large. He said investigations were underway.

Anyone with information on the suspects should contact the Douglasdale police or Crime Line as soon as possible.
