Vehicle-related theft continues to plague Sandton sectors

FOURWAYS - Residents are warned to exercise caution as theft out of motor vehicles and theft of motor vehicles continue to rank high among crimes reported to Sandton police.

In a report released by Captain Kym Cloete, communications official for Sandton police, vehicle-related crime continued to form the majority of incidents reported in Sector 1 (which includes Sunninghill). Most crimes crimes were committed between 3pm and 8.30pm on Tuesday and Friday, Cloete said. In Sector 2 (including Lonehill, Rietfontein and Paulshof) meanwhile, burglary was the main crime reported in the same week, with most crimes occurring on Tuesday and Thursday between 7pm and 11pm.

Residents should continue to exercise caution to minimise crime, particularly theft from and of motor vehicles, Cloete advised.

Motorists are advised to avoid parking their vehicles in areas where no security officers are operating, to ensure that all doors and windows and properly locked before leaving the car, and to keep valuable items in the car boot. Be aware of criminals using jamming devices, which are small, and can look like a gate remote, and look out for people sitting in neighbouring cars pretending to read.

When driving through the city centre, it is advisable to keep windows closed and doors locked, particularly at intersections, where particular caution is needed. Drivers should not use a cellphone unless they have a hands-free kit. When approaching your parked car, have your keys ready in your hand, especially if they are difficult to find in your handbag.

It is also wise to fit an alarm or anti-theft device to your car, Cloete advised.
