Police remember their forefathers

DOUGLASDALE - The officers of Douglasdale Police Station celebrated their diverse backgrounds along with their common goal of law enforcement for Heritage Day.

Many of the police officers decided to don their traditional dress a day before Heritage Day to show off their cultures and backgrounds. Warrant Officer Balan Muthan, head of communications for the Douglasdale police said after 1994 and the implementation of South Africa’s new constitution, the nation had become a very diverse society and Douglasdale police also followed in these diverse footsteps.

When asked what Heritage Day means to him, Muthan, who traces his ancestors back to South India, replied that it made him remember where his forefathers came from. “Heritage Day reminds me how my family has also helped in the building of a very diverse South Africa,” he said.

Muthan added that Heritage Day allowed people to show their historical background. “Heritage Day also allows you to remember where you came from and acknowledge where you are now,” he said. “Even though you come from different cultures and race groups, you can still work together in making this country a safer place for all inhabitants, not only for Heritage Day but everyday.”
