Local Fourways paramedic receives top honours

FOURWAYS- KYLE Shiel, employee at Life Fourways Hospital, was awarded the prestigious Judy Orpen award at the Netcare Education graduation in Pretoria.

His overall academic and clinical achievement in the Critical Care Assistant Programme was recognised through this prestigious award. Named as the overall top achiever for both the clinical and academic segments in the programme and the final examination process, Shiel is now thriving in his industry. He is employed at the Life Fourways Hospital as an Advance Life Support paramedic at the Life Support Unit. “I work to save and help others in the time of need and I am on call when the hospital needs my expertise,” he said.

Shiel completed his Critical Care Assistant paramedic training through the Netcare Education Faculty of emergency and critical care training college in Midrand. The CCA programme ensures all paramedics are trained as an Advance Life Support paramedic. This year long course is tough and in-depth with both clinical and academic aspects both in class and practically on the road and in hospital on real patients he added.

The Judy Orpen award was inspired by life support paramedic Matt Watermeyer who attempted to resuscitate a patient in 2010, and despite his exceptional skill and qualifications, the patient passed away. Gauteng training campus manager David Stanton and academic head Frauke Rosslee have highlighted Shiel as one of their top paramedics that has gone through their programme.

“With this award I’d love to thank Netcare Education, David Stanton, Frauke Rosslee, Matt Watermeyer ,everyone who supported me and most of all the Orpen family for this very prestigious award, I am forever grateful,” said Shiel.
