An accident waiting to happen

JOBURG - “I knew my daughter was dating a high profile athlete like Oscar and I fully supported her decisions despite my motherly intuitions.”

Those were the words of Patricia Taylor, co-author of Oscar, An accident waiting to happen, and mother of Oscar Pistorius’ ex-girlfriend Samantha.

Taylor, who owns an art gallery in Fourways and currently lives in Cape Town, and co-author Melinda Ferguson held their book launch at Exclusive Books in Rosebank on 18 September.

The controversial book is said to be a riveting tell-all and uncovers some of the untold stories surrounding Pistorius and his relationship with Taylor’s daughter.

Ferguson and Taylor said the book wasn’t merely a publicity gossip stunt. It had taken the pair almost a year to get the book written and finally published. However, being a witness in the Pistorius trial, Taylor said she was treading on dangerous ground and meeting up with Ferguson became a secretive affair as Taylor knew that news of the book would have stirred up controversy before the verdict was out.

Taylor revealed at the launch some personal experiences of how she and Samantha dealt with Oscar’s bizarre behaviour at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Although Pistorius and Samantha had broken up, Taylor said the athlete still attempted to maintain a relationship with Samantha and the family, and even sent Samantha tickets to attend the games.

The book also reveals Taylor’s thoughts when she first heard about Reeva Steenkamp’s death, and how it affected her and her family. “That could have been my Sammy,” she exclaimed.
