Alleged house robber captured

DIEPSLOOT - In the early hours of 12 August, an arrest was made by Diepsloot police after three men committed an armed robbery in a Diepsloot Ext 8 house.

Two of the men reportedly raped the occupants of the house, two young women aged 27 and 28, at gunpoint.

According to a statement released by Warrant Officer Daniel Mavimbela, spokesperson for the Diepsloot police station commander, police arrived promptly on the scene and with the help of the victims, located the suspects in a congested area of Diepsloot Ext 2. One of the suspects produced a firearm and fired at police with the bullet penetrating a nearby corrugated iron shack. No one was injured, but for the safety of residents, police were unable to return fire and the two rape suspects escaped arrest.

However, during a tactical sweep of the shacks in the immediate vicinity of the shooting incident, police found and caught the third suspect. Electrical appliances, identified as having been taken during the robbery, were found in another shack, and handgun ammunition, a magazine and cellphones without sim cards were also recovered.

The arrested suspect is due to appear at the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court and will be charged with armed robbery. Police are still searching for the remaining suspects, and anyone with information relating to this crime or others is urged to contact police.
