Advocate Jean Berdou, chairperson of the Douglasdale community policing forum, said the incident occurred at a Sasol garage on Malibongwe Drive, last week. According to Berdou patrolling police officers noticed a vehicle parked at the garage with the occupants acting suspiciously.
While the officers were watching the vehicle, three men alighted and went into the kiosk. The officers witnessed the men assaulting the shopkeeper and stepped in.
The suspects shot at the police who returned fire. A shootout ensued in which two of the suspects were fatally wounded, the third suspect was arrested and their firearms were recovered. Warrant officer Balan Muthan, head of communications for the Douglasdale police, commended the officers on their good work. According to Berdou police investigations, which are still underway, have tied the suspects to numerous other crimes in the Johannesburg North area.
