Public survey on e-tolls

JOBURG - The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Sacci) has launched a survey to obtain public opinion on e-tolls.

The five-question survey seeks to assess the public’s view on e-toll administration and requires no personal information.

Pietman Roos, Sacci’s senior policy consultant, said an earlier survey conducted by the chamber among its members, found that problems with the administrative aspects of e-tolling were prominent – with many businesses claiming that they had encountered several issues with system’s administration.

After making its presentation to the e-toll review panel, the chamber was advised by the panel to get additional feedback regarding e-toll administration from other businesses and the public.

“This is to further explore the problems with the administration of e-tolling by getting the public view.” Roos said.

Thus far, the chamber had received over 1 000 responses to the survey.

During it presentation to the advisory panel, the chamber said it was in favour of a fuel levy to fund the freeway upgrades, instead of e-tolling.

The chamber explained that it supported the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project and the infrastructure expansion in principle, but argued that it should be approached differently.
