Anti-crime sweeps in Douglasdale

PINESLOPES - Douglasdale police address the scourge of motor vehicle-related crime.

Douglasdale police joined forces with Fidelity Security Services to conduct a sweep of Pineslopes shopping centre’s car park.

This after a growing number of vehicle-related crimes in the parking area. The team questioned individuals loitering in the area, and made several arrests.

This operation was the latest in a series of anti-crime sweeps in the parking lots of shopping malls around Douglasdale, and was intended to deter criminals from targeting vehicles in the community.

Advocate Jean Berdou, chairperson of the Douglasdale Community Policing Forum, suggested various methods by which community members might take responsibility for their property. Berdou advised motorists to check that their vehicles were locked by physically trying the door handle and boot lid before goung into the shops. He warned residents not to leave property unattended, and where possible, not to keep valuables in vehicles. When valuables were left in the vehicle, they should be kept completely out of sight.

“Community apathy and carelessness leads to easy pickings for opportunistic criminal elements – not to mention such apathy attracts more criminals to the area to partake in the easy pickings. Play your part and be vigilant, and let’s defeat crime together,” Berdou urged.
