Pupils plant trees in celebration of spring.

LONEHILL- The first day of September meant that spring had officially arrived, and for the pupils of Crawford Preparatory School in Lonehill, it was also the start of Arbour Week and Silly Hat Day at the school.

The Grade 2 pupils chose an area in the school to plant new plants and trees on 1 September.

According to Debbie Fanti, an educator at the school, “We stay indigenous and have chosen plants that are able to survive the severe frost at our campus, especially down at the river where it is very cold.”

The day saw each class participate in planting a tree and small plants. The school had decided to plant acacia trees around the border of the staff parking and make a new flower bed at the school’s exit gate.

Fanti added the pupils have been learning about the importance of being green and taking care of the environment. “By planting trees and plants it has allowed the children to be a part of this process,” she said.

It also will require the pupils to take responsibility for their plants and they will have to water their little projects for the rest of the year.

The day ended with the pupils donning their silly hats which some of them had made and admiring their planted trees and plants in celebration of spring.
