Miss Earth 2014 announced

MONTECASINO - Miss Earth South Africa 2014 was announced at a star-studded event at the Palazzo Hotel in Montecasino.

Miss Earth is a leadership programme that aims to empower young South African women with the knowledge and platform to create a sustainable difference in combating the destruction of South Africa’s natural heritage.

The programme helps to create an awareness of sustainable development, the environment, wildlife, and the conservation and the preservation of the earth. The leadership programme kicked off in March this year with educational workshops and a series of environmental tasks for the 13 finalists in the competition. “The participants [in the competition] made an effort to inspire and educate individuals, schools, communities, corporate South Africa and policymakers to consider the environment and the challenges that we face as a nation and indeed as a continent,” said Catherine Constantinides, executive director of Miss Earth South Africa.

The competition culminated with the announcement event that hosted a range of A-list South African celebrities and Minister of Environmental Affairs, Edna Molewa. Miss Earth 2013, Ashanti Mbanga gave a moving farewell speech, thanking the many people who had helped her during her reign. The big announcement was finally made and Miss Earth South Africa 2014 was revealed to be Ilze Saunders from the North West province.

The runner’s up, who will also be Miss Earth ambassadors for 2014 were Roxanne Watson from Hillcrest in Kwa-Zulu Natal, Michillay Brown from Melville in Johannesburg and Steffani Alexander from Sandton.
