Fun walk to be held in aid of kidney disease

KYALAMI- A fun walk will take place at the Waterfall Estate on 24 September. The walk has been organised by The National Kidney Foundation of South Africa.

The walk will consist of a 5km and 8km route through the Waterfall Country Estate.

Event organiser David O’Reilly said, “The day will be like a carnival atmosphere where families can come together and celebrate Heritage Day outdoors.” There will be food stalls, drinks as well as free screening of kidney health risk factors at the walk.

The Kidney Fun Walk is aimed at raising funds to implement the foundation’s schools’ education project. The project promotes awareness about kidney health through lectures and interviews.

Signs of kidney complications can result from high blood pressure and diabetes, and the youth are also at risk.

According to O’Reilly, one out of 10 people will likely end up with kidney failure. “The walk will attempt to eradicate this statistic by encouraging the public to join in,” he added. He stressed that there is a pre-registration period to enter which closes on 19 September; participants can also register online on the day of the race.

The cost per person is R80 (R60 for children under the age of six). O’Reilly added dogs are also welcome on the day free of charge and the race begins at 8am to 12 noon.
