Things that go bump in the night

DAINFERN - Dainfern resident and filmmaker, Wim Spronk has captured the imaginations of the members of the Randburg Horticultural Society.

Spronk, a talented photographer and filmmaker held an illustrated talk on the rich heritage of insects and birds found in the northern suburbs at Michael’s Church in Bryanston for members of the society.

Among the insects he spoke about was the praying mantis, which is also the subject of a documentary which he recently showcased at the University of the Witwatersrand.

The documentary, Secrets of Pilanesberg, captures the life of a praying mantis. It shows how a female praying mantis rips off its mate’s head while mating.

According to Spronk the scent of mating arouses the female to act in such a manner and she gains strength to produce the next generation.

The documentary also captures the life-span of dragonflies.
