Labourer knocked and killed on Witkoppen

PAULSHOF - A LABOURER on the Witkoppen Road upgrade project died after being knocked down by a truck on 22 August.

Ward 93 councillor Annette Deppe said that the incident occurred at 9am. The man was apparently working on the barricades between the road and the construction site when a speeding truck knocked him down.

According to Deppe the labourer was rushed to Sunninghill Hospital for treatment but died soon after. She said that the man was originally from the Eastern Cape but he is thought to have been a resident of Clay Oven informal settlement.

The contractors for the Witkoppen upgrade held a meeting to break the news to residents of Clay Oven on the afternoon of 22 August. A representative of Phagama Civil and Maintenance, the contractors for the upgrade, said that the truck driver stopped after the accident, and the company is conducting an investigation into the accident.

Deppe said she would like to inform the public that they need to be careful when driving on Witkoppen Road while the upgrade is taking place. She added that drivers should drive extra carefully during the construction of the road.

  1. Shame, that’s terrible. It us extremely dangerous on Witkoppen at present, I witnessed a cyclist and worker almost get hit. They have not allowed enough room for cars, even driving slowly. TERRIBLE PLANNING
