Police spokesperson Captain Tsekiso Mofokeng said the 42-year-old suspect was arrested in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu Natal. He added, “The suspect was on the run following the murder of a woman on Sunday [17 August] afternoon on the corner of Peter Place and Karen Street in Bryanston.”

Mofokeng identified the woman as 41-year-old Shareen Pillay and confirmed that she was murdered by her husband.

Pillay was found with 50 stab wounds on 17 August by a passerby who alerted the paramedics. ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaark said Pillay was barely responsive when paramedics arrived at the scene. He said she later died at Mediclinic Sandton after substantial blood loss.

The suspect will appear at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on 20 August on charges of murder.
