Community Policing Forum urges community involvement

DOUGLASDALE - The Douglasdale Community Policing Forum calls on all residents to do their bit for the unity and security of the community, by participating in the forum's many programmes for volunteers.

The forum seeks to mobilise both businesses and individuals, said Douglasdale CPF chair, Jéan Berdou, adding, “If all they can give is their time, that’s enough.”

That time will be put to good use at the Douglasdale Client Service Centre, where residents can answer phones, take reports, and assist with the smooth running of the police station. Such assistance will be invaluable in improving service delivery and residents’ experiences at the station.

“Most people interact with the police station at that level,” said Berdou. “It’s easy to criticise… ok, come and help.”

The community-minded who have experience in counselling can volunteer at the very active trauma response unit, where victims of crime are supported in the aftermath of their experiences. The unit would also benefit from donations in the form of care packages for rape victims, tea and coffee, magazines or any items that might help comfort individuals after a horrifying ordeal.

For under-50s who are fit and willing, the lifting of a moratorium on training police reservists presents the opportunity to serve in uniform. Working shifts for the neighbourhood watch offers camaraderie as well as the chance to be the eyes and ears of the neighbourhood.

“This is a very effective deterrent to crime, and would help keep our neighbourhoods a lot safer,” encouraged Berdou.

He said that those who are unable or unwilling to commit to formal roles and regular shifts in the service of the community policing forum, are asked to help in any way they can. The opportunities to contribute are endless, from events organisation or fundraising to equipment donations. The difference such involvement can make will soon be displayed in a comprehensive upgrade of the Douglasdale Police Station, partly funded by community donations.

All volunteering efforts will be deeply appreciated by the forum, and will represent another step forward in uniting residents, building community spirit, and inhibiting crime, Berdou said.
