We cannot play the blame game

DOUGLASDALE - Douglasdale Community Police Forum’s Sector 4 deputy chairperson, Willem Hazewindus held a discussion at Crawford Lonehill College.

Hazewindus was invited by the school’s psychologist, Lloyd Ripley-Evans to adddress Grade 8 pupils and he tackled some key issues around personal security.

As a victim of an armed robbery, Hazewindus also addressed the issues and concerns the public have with the police. He asked pupils what their thoughts were on the police, and many expressed their lack of distrust and were concerned about stories relating to bribery and corruption.

Hazewindus said there was a need for the community to rebuild a relationship with the police. “We need to follow the right procedures when a crime has taken place,” he said. “The police can only assist you if you provide the necessary information to them.”

He encouraged the pupils to involve their parents to become aware of the key individuals in the police. “This will ensure the forum can follow up on crimes and grievances and provide necessary support,” he said.

Hazewindus said the most common crime committed in the Fourways area was smash and grab, which was a result of people leaving their handbags, electronic items and personal belongings on display in cars. “We need to be more vigilant and aware of our surroundings,” he said.

He added that people could not blame the police if they were irresponsible.

Grade 8 pupil Shannon Mckay (14) commented on the discussion. “I found the seminar interesting and informative, it changed my mind about the police,” she said. Mckay added she would tell her parents about the forum and not to be afraid to pass on their details to the police.

Community members have been invited to comment and raise their concerns through the forum.
