According to the Bedfordview and Edenvale News hostage negotiators from the South African police service had to be called in.
The acting spokesperson for the Edenvale SAPS, Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Roberts, said the girl was walking from Edenglen to Highway Gardens when she was kidnapped.
The kidnappers demanded a substantial ransom for her release which was to be deposited into a bank account.
The cellphone the girl had called from was traced to Johannesburg and the girl was later found at a filling station in Sunninghill.
