FreeMe gets scholarly help

PAULSHOF - FreeMe wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centre in Paulshof had some welcome help from a dedicated group of engineering students and a Sandton hotel.

In 2012 Intercontinental Johannesburg Sandton Towers sponsored the renovation of a tortoise enclosure at FreeMe. Due to the large number of tortoises passing through FreeMe, the hotel decided to sponsor an extension to the existing enclosure.

With all the building materials in hand, who better to build the tortoise enclosure extension than a team of engineering students. University of Pretoria engineering student, Avania Ravinath explained that as part of their syllabus the students had to submit a project on practical engineering experience and since her group happened to be comprised of animal lovers they decided to contact FreeMe to offer their assistance.

The students commenced the building of the enclosure on 2 July and worked consistently during their holidays and weekends. The students eventually completed the extension to the enclosure on 10 August.
