Train to help the visually impaired

FOURWAYS - There's an opportunity for those who enjoy the caring professions. The College of Orientation and Mobility invites applicants for its diploma to help the visually impaired.

There are about 388 000 blind South Africans, and another 1.34 million who have low vision. Like everybody, people with visual impairments want the freedom to go to the shops and bank, visit friends, attend church, and carry out daily tasks. And they want to do so without being dependent on another person to guide them or do things for them.

The College of Orientation and Mobility is calling on motivated, people-oriented individuals to apply for its two-year Diploma Course in Orientation and Mobility Practice, and do their part in helping South Africans with a visual impairment. Successful candidates will have their training costs sponsored, and will be provided with a stipend.

This career path is ideal for those who don’t want a desk job, and instead enjoy working with people, being out of doors, and taking responsibility for their own working days.

Applicants should have a matric certificate, including English and biology (recommended), be aged between 22 and 45, physically fit, computer literate and be able to communicate well in written and spoken English. A driver’s licence and at least one additional language are recommended.

The candidate must have a positive and empathetic attitude towards people with disabilities, specifically those with visual impairments. Applicants should have an interest in community involvement, and a demonstrable desire to problem-solve and to effectively train others.

The next course starts 29 September at the College of Orientation & Mobility, 126 Wroxham Road, Paulshof.
