Caring for disadvantaged animals

FOURWAYS - Pet Empowerment in Townships (Pets), strives to empower animals in poor communities and townships.

They work to improve the lives of disadvantaged animals by giving them daily meals, warm shelter, regular inoculations, sterilisations and veterinarian care in emergencies.

They also re-home those who are unwanted, unloved or lost.

The branch based in Fourways, works to improve the living conditions of animals by educating the public. Laura Whittaker from Pets, believes in working hand-in-hand with people in impoverished areas to create unity, trust and stability for all.

Moreover, this organisation urges the public to support their initiative of re-homing dogs who are in desperate need of homes. One recent addition looking for a loving new home is Cheesecurl, who was rescued during their last spayathon. She is well-behaved and has a gentle nature.

“Unfortunately she has been over-bred and is quite old,” added Whittaker.

Additionally Rogue and Storm are 10-week-old pups who urgently need new homes. Storm is very cute with white stripes down her face and is quite energetic and vivacious.

To make Pets a success, Whittaker said dog and cat food are needed, as well as bowls, blankets, collars, leashes, fly cream, and treatments are also required.

Pets emphasises that without the community’s help they cannot assist the needy cats and dogs, and in order to prevent future unwanted animals, neutering and sterilisations need to be performed.

Despite this, they continue to provide these services.
