Sewer leak could be foam culprit

FARMALL - The cause of noxious foam on the Klein Jukskei River in Farmall could be due to a sewer leak in the area.

In early July the Fourways Review reported that Farmall residents were anxious about a foul-smelling foam which had been coming off the Klein Jukskei River.

At the time, residents were concerned about chemical dumping while ward councillor for Ward 96, Matome Mafokwane suggested that illegal dumping could be to blame. However, a photograph sent in to the Fourways Review shows what appears to be a leak in the sewer line which runs over the Klein Jukskei River.

Farmall resident Gavin Tonks said that there has been a resurgence of the noxious foam in the area of late and that the dam in Watercombe Road in Farmall now has grey effluent stuck to it.

“I mean just the smell is enough to put you off,” he said. Millicent Kabwe, spokesperson of Johannesburg Water, said that they have arranged a team to inspect the site to see if there are any leaks. “We will remedy the situation if it’s something Johannesburg Water can resolve immediately,” she said.
