Pets protects animal rights – with your help

FOURWAYS - Pet Empowerment in Townships (Pets) is not an animal shelter - it is a countrywide organisation working to create loving homes for pets in the communities where they belong.

Pets volunteers have worked tirelessly in Johannesburg townships for the last several years, providing healthcare and education to improve the lives of dogs and cats in less privileged communities. The organisation runs bi-monthly ‘spayathons’, sterilising 50 township dogs, as well as vaccinating and deworming a further 350. Participating owners are given a bag of dog food to help them take care of their pets at home.

In-between such marathon events, Pets works in the townships on a daily basis, responding to calls from owners and community members, providing veterinary services for sick and injured animals, and educating the community about responsible pet ownership. The aim is to work with the community, to avoid the need for pets to be removed from their owners.

Of course, the need does arise for Pets volunteers to rescue mistreated, neglected or abandoned dogs and cats, which are given a foster home in the Pets network until they can be re-homed. Pets runs regular adoption days, where puppies are socialised and given a chance to capture people’s hearts.
