Old timers need homes

FOURWAYS - Animal rescue group, Paws R Us is struggling to home older dogs which have been living in shelters for a number of years.

Paws R Us is not a shelter, but rather a rescue group which has united more than 50 foster homes across Gauteng. All the team members are volunteers who also have full-time jobs. The group focuses on supporting existing animal welfare organisations such as the SPCA to get their orphan animals adopted.

Currently the group is housing a number of ‘old timers’ in kennels and foster homes which they hope will soon be adopted so that the dogs can have a better quality of life.

Some of these mature canines are miniature pinscher, Spike which has been housed at a kennel in Midrand since April last year. At first he did not get along well with other dogs, but now happily shares his kennel with another dog. Another dog which is looking for her forever home is Shadow, a five-year-old medium collie mix who has been living in a kennel for more than 12 months. Shadow was picked up as a stray, but is a friendly and gentle dog which loves children. Small wiry terrier, Captain is a particularly special case as he was picked up as a stray with his right eye already partially removed. Sadly the vet who removed his right eye also damaged his left eye to such an extent that he is nearly completely blind in his left eye. Yet this little survivor has not been deterred by his disability and quickly adjusts to new surroundings. Captain has been living in a kennel in Midrand since November last year. All dogs up for adoption have been de-wormed, vaccinated, sterilised and micro-chipped. Adoption will be on condition of a strict home check and the payment of a R900 adoption fee.
