Supermarket superstar
FOURWAYS - Floor manager by day, superstar by night, Frans van Rensburg (24) is making his music dreams come true.
Van Rensburg was a semi-finalist in the Shoprite Topstars Competition. The competition is an initiative started by the Shoprite group to empower their employees through music. At the semi-finals road show held at Montecasino, Van Rensburg performed a moving rendition of Evergreen, and won the hearts of the audience and the judges who awarded him title of Best Spirit.
Van Rensburg is a familiar face to Fourways residents who will recognise him as the floor manager at Checkers Hyper in Fourways Mall. The muso said that despite his day job, music was his passion and he had been singing since he was in high school. Van Rensburg said he aspired to one day become a professional musician and was inspired to do so by his mother.
The reason he chose the song Evergreen for his Topstars performance was because it was his mother’s favourite song. Some of Van Rensburg’s music heroes include Ronan Keating and UK Pop Idol season one runner-up, Gareth Gates. Van Rensburg who lives in Pretoria, said he spent every free moment practising singing because his dream was to break into the music industry.
