Puppies need 67 minutes

CHARTWELL- Ark Animal Centre is encouraging the community to consider the shelter when choosing what to do on Mandela Day.

The shelter which is based in Chartwell, is the leading facility for the care and re-homing of puppies and mother dogs in South Africa, but they always need help to continue their good work.

Candice Eilertsen of the shelter said in honour of Nelson Mandela they have planned a full day of fun and exciting jobs for the public to complete their 67 minutes, and in turn help the shelter. “Last year we had almost 400 people come through for Mandela Day and we are expecting the same this year,” Eilertsen said.

There are two key areas the shelter has identified to work on for Mandela Day. These are the children’s party area and the puppy central kennels. “Due to the high demand for events and birthday parties to be held at Ark Animal Centre, we have decided to embark on a new endeavour and build an area which can be used for these events,” Eilertsen said. “This will bring in much-needed funds for the shelter and enable us to educate people on what we do and how to be responsible pet owners.”

The materials the shelter needs in order to build the party area are three self-standing umbrellas, 45 running metres of stepping stones for walkways, six evergreen trees, any assorted plants and shrubs, 25 litres of undercoat and brown paint for braai and seating areas, play sand, benches, garden ornaments, wishing wells and lots of grass.

The shelter will also be working on their puppy central area on Mandela Day and need paint brushes, paint rollers, paint trays, ground sheets, silver paint for fences, and 10 wall panel heaters in order to make the area livable for their many puppy residents.
