Community activist can make a model ward

FOURWAYS – The ANC’s candidate ward councillor for Ward 112, Leverne Young emphasised community members should vote for the person most capable of doing the job.

She put forward her experience, skill and the fact that she is a resident of the ward as to why she is the most suitable candidate.

She recalled how her new party, the ANC said, “… that despite a very limited budget allocated to this ward, Ward 112 was regarded as one of the best managed wards in Joburg” with Young as councillor.

Young said some residents were shocked when she crossed the political floor to join the ANC from the DA in April. She said her motives were a combination of feeling disgruntled by certain campaign pressures which led her to believe there was not a strong leadership in the DA; as well as the opportunity to receive more resources and managerial support from the mayor and Gauteng premier by joining the ANC.

She said service delivery is a top priority in the ANC’s mandate and she could make sure that was implemented in Ward 112. “It was truly a very agonising decision but the ultimate decision was made to better the ward [for] the residents, after all, I live here too, my kids live and work here so whatever decision I made, it affected me as well,” said Young.

Her wish is to make Ward 112 a “model ward” in the city.

Some of her plans to do this include establishing a recreation centre, another clinic, more schools, lower crime rates, implement traffic control mechanisms and increase rubbish removal from dumping sites.

She said among her successes as ward councillor were establishing and maintaining residents’ associations, Joburg 10 Plus committees and a number of road re-surfacing, building and rehabilitation projects.

“[My strengths as ward councillor are] excellent project management skills, [the ability] to foster and maintain good relationships with residents and service providers and ensure effective implementation is always top-of-mind,” she said.

Young has already been addressing residents on how Ward 112 could be better for them and encourages residents to contact her at any time.

“I am and always will be a community activist – so to have a job which feeds my passion about making the place that I live be the best I can, I’m happy with that,” she said.

She said residents should give her a chance to prove herself until the 2016 local elections.
